Act to Act

by Candice Bolek

Actors know there is any number of things we could be doing to advance our careers at any given moment.  The list might include finding an agent, getting new headshots, shooting scenes for a demo reel, building a website, registering on casting sites, taking class, submitting to breakdowns, attending casting director workshops, etc.  Breakdowns, and headshots, and reels…oh my!

At times it can be overwhelming figuring out what the next step should be.  We can look at all of our potential moves and drive ourselves nuts asking, “Is this worth my time? Is that worth my money?  Will doing this REALLY do anything for my career?”  Believe me, I wish I had a crystal ball, but in the words of hockey great, Wayne Gretzky, here is what I do know; “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Simply stated…take action!  As actors, the good news is we are in business for ourselves and the bad news is…we are in business for ourselves.  What is easy for us to do is equally as easy for us not to do.  Our careers can only rise to the level we are willing to put in the effort to make them happen.  So often we stop ourselves before we start by getting caught up in what is going to work or how it’s going to work.  That is out of our control.  We can only control the actions we take now and the intentions we set for our advancement.

Now, this doesn’t mean we need to launch an all out assault on the industry.  Baby steps count too!  What seems to be the most insignificant of efforts can actually produce significant results.  You could take two minutes out of your day to submit for a project through a random email, and the next thing you know, your national commercial is airing.  This may or may not have happened to me, which leads me to a word about agents – whether you have representation or not, you can create your own work.  Regardless of no team or a lackluster team, remember, you are on your team too.  Forgive me for another sports quote, but my favorite athlete, Michael Jordan, once said, “There is no ‘I’ in team, but there is in win.”

I dare you to take action without regard for the outcome.  Nothing works all of the time, but everything works some of the time.  At the very least, you’ll send energy out to the universe in this area of your life, and the universe can attract/conspire/respond (whatever the universe does) in your favor.  Just throw the proverbial spaghetti!  In the end, there’s no telling what is going to work, but if you sling enough noodles, something is going to stick!
